Adjustable beds are the latest post-pandemic buy for many couples and families. For one, they offer a better and healthier night’s sleep. A quality adjustable bed base is typically pricier, and you may have thought of using your current mattress to save money on buying a brand new mattress.
Can any mattress be used on an adjustable bed? Let’s find out below which type of mattress you can use for that adjustable bed you’ve been eyeing on.
1. Memory Foam Mattresses
Going for a full memory foam mattress for your adjustable bed can provide you gentle support, motion isolation and contouring around your body. Memory foam mattresses are great for adjustable bed bases because these adjustable bases have multiple moving parts to bend the bed at different angles. Therefore, you definitely need a mattress that’s flexible enough to bend.
2. Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses, particularly natural or organic latex, have a longer lifespan due to their natural durability, which makes them an ideal choice for adjustable beds. They have a bouncier feel than memory foam while still delivering comfort and support. Other than being durable, natural latex mattresses are also antimicrobial and temperature regulating.
3. Pocket Spring Mattresses
Regular spring mattresses such as those with Bonnell springs may not be a good option for an adjustable bed frame. The springs within the bed may not be as flexible as needed. However, a mattress with pocket springs can be paired with an adjustable bed frame as the springs are individually compressed and wouldn’t compromise the structure of your adjustable bed.
4. Hybrid Mattresses
One hybrid mattress can differ from another hybrid mattress, and it may not be compatible with your adjustable bed base. Generally, hybrid mattresses are made with latex, memory foam or both (in the comfort layers) alongside a pocket spring support base.
Hybrid mattresses can provide excellent support and airflow for less body heat retention, but their springs may not flex as easily as memory foam. Hence, it’s a good idea to check with the manufacturer whether the hybrid mattress can be used with adjustable bed bases. Nevertheless, most hybrid mattresses have modern pocket springs in their bases which are designed to move independently from each other to work well.
Our Baton Sleep’s hybrid mattresses come with a combination of memory foam and high-density foam for pressure-relieving and body-moulding sleep comfort. In fact, all of Baton Sleep’s mattresses have individually-pocketed springs to absorb your partner’s tosses and turns, so that there’ll be minimal to no motion transfer when sharing the bed. Best of all, these mattresses are compatible with our adjustable beds!
Mattresses That Aren’t Suitable For Adjustable Beds
Can any bed go on an adjustable bed frame? Unfortunately, no. You have to consider two aspects when looking for an adjustable bed mattress:
(i) Size & Thickness
Your mattress can fit the adjustable bed frame if it follows the Singapore-standard sizes of mattress. Before buying, take the measurements of your mattress and refer to the dimensions chart of the preferred adjustable bed base.
Besides that, you need to take into consideration the thickness of your mattress. It is recommended to choose a mattress with a thickness of less than 12″ or 300mm. If it’s any thicker, it won’t be easy for the mattress to bend and conform to the elevation of the adjustable bed frame.
(ii) Type of Mattress
Generally, using a memory foam or pocketed spring mattress on an adjustable bed is fine. However, if your current mattress is made of Bonnell springs, it’s not advisable to pair it with an adjustable bed as the elevation may affect the durability of the Bonnell springs.
Did You Know?
Do you know the additional benefit of getting a king-sized adjustable bed? That would be the ability to choose to have 2 single-sized mattresses instead of the typical 1 king-sized mattress. And what’s the benefit of that you may think? Other than allowing you to choose your personal elevation setting that may differ from your partner’s, both of you can select your preferred mattress’ density without having to compromise. Typically, the ladies would prefer our medium-firm density mattress, which is our Hybrid mattress, while the gents would go for our firm density mattress, which is our Regular mattress.
Knowing how to choose a mattress for your adjustable bed is essential to ensure a comfortable sleep and long-term use. Having an adjustable bed can fine-tune your sleep to its most optimal sleeping position.
