The Art of Elevated Seating: A Look at Bar & Counter Stools

Elevated seating options are easily the belles of the ball in any home setting. What makes them stand out is their natural ability to blend comfort, aesthetics, and functionality. And if you didn’t know, there are several variations to elevated seating options: bar stool and counter stool. Here at Comfort Furniture Singapore, we are proudly the experts of both. Let’s discover the differences between the two, the materials they are usually made of, how to clean their cushions, and more!

What's the difference between a bar stool and a counter stool?

As these variations possess similar characteristics, let us guide you through their differences:

  • First and foremost, bar stools are taller than counter stools. Therefore, bar stools are often matched with bar tables of 1000mm to 1050mm in height. Meanwhile, counter stools are usually matched with breakfast counters or island counters which are approximately 800mm to 950mm in height.
  • There are also bar chairs, which are basically bar stools with back support. The backrest support for bar chairs usually comes in low-back or mid-back height. They don’t have high-back options like those you would find in dining chairs because that will visually obstruct the space they are in. Fun fact: counter stools can be fully tucked in underneath a bar table if it does not contain any storage cabinets!

What should I look for when choosing a bar or counter stool?

There are several aspects to consider when choosing a bar or counter stool:

1. Height of the bar/counter stool

According to Comfort Furniture Singapore’s Furniture Virtuoso, Grace, you should aim to achieve a +/- of 300mm difference between the top of the table and the seat height of the bar stool or counter stool. This would make the seating experience much more comfortable, and of course, ergonomic.

2. Style of the bar/counter stool

Here’s a pro tip by Grace: you should always gauge the look and feel of your bar chair from its back, instead of the front. This is because bar chairs are often tucked into our tables, so we often appreciate their beauty and style from behind. Pair that with the ambience of your dining space, and you will have the best combination.

3. Material of the bar/counter stool

When choosing a material, you should always opt for quality materials. And how we define quality is its durability, because a bar stool is a daily-use piece of furniture. If you are opting for a bar/counter stool with upholstery, do consider ease of cleaning and maintenance, or, ask if that fabric is available in repellant option - a treatment given to the fabric to make it repellant to water and stains. And speaking of materials, what you choose will determine the style it exudes. For instance, rattan gives off a nostalgic Scandinavian vibe as rattan is always a spotlight stealer, no matter the era.

4. Comfort levels of the bar/counter stool

When deciding on comfort levels, always look at how your back and bottom will react to the chair:

  • Start with either a backless stool or a stool with a backrest
  • From there, decide on either low-back or mid-back
  • After that, make the executive choice of cushioned, or without

5. Swivel or stationary bar/counter stool

This is always a very subjective question, as stationary bar/counter stools work just fine. However, there is something about a swivel stool that just makes it a lot more versatile, as you can always rotate them (and probably also adjust their height) without much effort. Ultimately, this goes back to the space you have at home.

6. Footrest height and stability of the bar/counter stool

When deciding on this, you need to consider if the stools at home will be used by the elderly or children, and if they will be placed in a space that’s high on traffic. For example, if you were to place it in the living room, then many would go and take a seat unconsciously. Therefore, you need one with a sturdier footrest to factor in wear and tear. To learn more, you can always visit our piece article that talks about 5 tips on choosing the right bar stools.

Can I customise my bar/counter stools to fit my existing furniture and interior decor?

If you get it from Comfort Furniture, you definitely can! Yes, we offer customised options for selected models, so reach out to our team to get your dream set of bar/counter stools. Our customisation covers, but not limited to, upholstery type, colour customisations as well as height alternation!

Where else can I use a bar/counter stool aside from the dining room?

As it is naturally an all-rounded piece of furniture, you can use it at the vanity table in the bedroom, gaming or recreation room, craft room, studio and even the patio! Yes, Comfort Furniture carries bar chairs for the outdoors too!

How do I clean my bar/counter stools and their cushion?

When spills occur, wipe them immediately to prevent stains! Make sure to use a damp cloth every time, including regular wiping and cleaning. If your bar/counter stools are upholstered or come with a cushion, vacuuming them regularly will help keep them looking brand new!
