With Great Workstations Come Great Productivity
What makes an office workstation great? While there are a number of reasons, these three are the most important: size, height, and leg room.
Why does the size of the workstation table or desk matter?
Most of us have the tendency to put more than just our work essentials on our office workstation. Some put their favourite framed family photo, and some place their favourite model kits or fun props to brighten the mood. Some even place artificial planters. Therefore, every employee should have a table with dimensions of at least 1200mm width to work with. However, in the event that 1.2m-wide tables are a luxury that the company can't afford—such as buying to equip a call centre or a hot-desking office—then other storage solutions like lockers and mobile pedestals will come in handy! A little thoughtfulness goes a long way in improving morale at the office.
Why does the height of the workstation table or desk matter?
While most office chairs are height-adjustable, we are still limited by how tall the table is. Take for example, a chair that’s adjusted to maximum height, paired with a fairly short table; the result: the employee can never view their laptop at eye level, and they will end up stressing their neck. Indeed, you may lower your chair, but those with a longer lower half might find it uncomfortable and eventually injure their lower back or knee region. The golden rule is to opt for tables that are at least 750mm tall. However, there’s always height-adjustable tables and laptop risers. With these, the luxury of flexibility is always present, and they can also switch it to standing mode when they need to.
Why is leg room important?
Ultimately, it boils down to feeling comfortable at your workstation. For starters, some people prefer to do some light stretching while being seated. Furthermore, fidgeting while sitting down negates the harsh effects of sitting for too long. All of the above will require ample leg room. This becomes even more important when you’re planning to get double-sided workstation tables or desks. Accidentally kicking your coworkers will be the last thing on your to-do list.
Of course, there are many more contributing factors to a productive office environment. For example, having a fun theme, followed by play areas and rest areas with multipurpose furniture pieces like modular sofas are great ways to start!
